Workplace Safety – An Issue We Should All Be Aware of

When you think of safety equipment and workplace safety you may think of workplaces

such as factories and laboratories the kind of environments where you'd expect to find hard hats, safety glasses and other items of vital safety equipment. What is often overlooked are the items of safety equipment and general awareness of other hazards in the workplace and this means the environments you may not expect to be fraught with danger such as an office or shop.

There is obviously the common safety equipment we'll see in all workplaces such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits as these can both be required in an emergency. Fire extinguishers in particular can come in many different types which are able to combat particular varieties of fires from paper and wood based fires to electrical fires. Using the wrong kind of extinguisher can be at best ineffective and in some cases can actually cause more harm than good. This is why your workplace should have a designated fire marshal as well as a trained first aider so that the right equipment and procedures are used.

Other safety issues that may be overlooked include making sure that all cables and wiring is properly maintained, trailing cables and wires can be a tripping hazard as well as an electrical hazard if any split wires drag through puddles or any water. Making sure all cables whether they are computer network cables, telephone wires or power leads are securely plugged in and tucked away using cable tidy accessories and switched off when not in use is a safer way to operate and can reduce the number of needless accidents in the workplace.

The traffic and vehicle management on our work's premises can be an area where your business could be held liable for damage or any other issues, especially in winter. Make sure your car parks and site roads are clearly signposted for any site traffic, speed restrictions and other hazards to be on the lookout for. In winter you should use salt spreaders and grit bins to thaw out your roads and make your businesses car park and pathways safe for all motorists and pedestrians.

Work place safety is something all employees should be made aware of, it shouldn't be left to one health and safety volunteer to make sure practices and rules are observed, many companies will dedicate time and resources to train and teach employees and include this either upon joining the company or at regular intervals to ensure everyone is refreshed on the details.
