World Change

It's important to sit back and reflect on the current events that are taking place around the world and especially in the Middle East. For the past century, People looked at the Middle East as a hopeless region. Colonial powers have conquered, destroyed, shaped, and drained the region for most of the twentieth and early twenty first century. World super powers have decided between themselves the fate of the region as if no one lived in it. Leaders of the Middle East have been puppets of one world power or the other. People throughout the region were oppressed and suppressed by their puppet governments in order to stay in power and serve their masters. The resources in the Middle East were sold to the highest bidder, but at a very cheap price nonetheless. Saudi oil is sold to America for a bargain in exchange for America's protection of the ruling Saudi family. That used to be the case in Iran until the 1979 Islamic revolution which got rid of the Shah, who was a western puppet. The wrath of the US was then directed towards Iran to scare the people of the region from revolting against their pro-western leaders. The Iranian revolution didn't have a domino effect on other countries in the region, because Iran is a majority Shia country whereas the rest of the countries are majority Sunni, not including Israel. Then, the US government encouraged Iraq to attack Iran, and later coordinated with Israel to supply weapons to Iran to drain both countries' resources. This happened as a result of Iraq's ever increasing power in the 1980s which Israel was afraid of. So, an eight year war that didn't achieve a single objective except for destroying each countries' economy and killing millions of people was encouraged by the west and Israel. The current events in the Middle East have caught the west off guard. In Tunisia, a street vendor sparked a revolution that would cause its president, Zein Al Abideen Ben Ali, to flee the country. This gave the Egyptian people the confidence that they needed to start their own revolution that toppled one of the strongest, and most pro-western leaders in the Middle East, Hosni Mubarak. Muammar Gaddafi, president of Libya, is now on the verge of being toppled as well. Current protests in Yemen and Bahrain are gaining momentum as well. The world will never be the same, because world powers are going to have to deal with the Arab people, not with their western chosen dictators. The time of depending on Arab leaders to suppress their people rather than giving them the respect and consideration that they deserve is over. That's why president Obama has ordered his advisers and commanders to devise a new strategy in order to deal with the Middle East. In other words, he has asked them to add one more variable to the equation of the Middle East, the Arab people.
