World Cup 2010: Fabio Capello watches England's best players struggle against unfancied Algeria

England were booed off at half-time and the final whistle and there will be concern over another woeful display by Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United striker was way below his best and looked shattered as he struggled to get into the game.

Out-of-sorts Frank Lampard wasted England's best chance to take the lead after 33 minutes but his shot was well saved by Algeria keeper Rais M'Bolhi.

Algeria grew stronger as the game wore on and clueless England were getting increasingly desperate.

David James, recalled in place of Rob Green, was hardly tested in a game that was among the poorest of the tournament to date.

England fans made their feelings known, their jeers briefly drowning out the vuvuzelas in the Green Point Stadium. That was a first for Capello but showed supporters were beginning to get twitchy about the team's chances of progress in the competition.

This was supposed to be an easy passage for England, but they have made hard work of it.

Capello could not contain his fury on the touchline, throwing tantrums and rollicking his players.

It will be even harder without Jamie Carragher, who was booked for a foul on Algeria's Hassan Yebda and is now suspended for the final group match against Slovenia on Wednesday.

England will need a big result and performance to restore some faith in Capello's World Cup chances after two disappointing displays.
