The research carried out by Drinkaware and Bupa has revealed that, although 9 out of 10 deemed it unacceptable to go to work with a hangover, 1 in 5 admitted having done just that. Obviously the effects of alcohol consumption will in turn affect the quality and amount of work carried out by that employee. In addition to their workload, there are also the aspects of travelling safely to and from work which have to be considered.

It is believed that the trend is set not only to continue, but to become more of a common occurrence for the duration of the World Cup. In previous World Cup periods, employers have been known to show a degree of flexibility with their staff, allowing them to start late or make up time off on non-match days. This however, cannot be applied to all businesses and depends entirely upon one's employer. The main advice given by Bupa and Drinkaware to employers is to have in place a coherent alcohol policy and standardised disciplinary procedures to follow in the case of an employee arriving at work with a hangover.

Another piece of guidance offered is to perhaps look into the possible reasons why some employees mat be drinking heavily. There are a range of helpful options for people suffering from alcohol dependency including advice from your GP, or from a relevant charity such as Drinkaware. Another option may be to attend a drug or alcohol abuse screening or rehabilitation centre, both of which may be covered under either one's own health insurance policy, or even a company health insurance policy.

In the short term however, it is best for an employer to request that an employee return home if he is unfit for work, especially in the case of alcohol misuse, where hungover staff are more likely to cause accidents and be generally less productive.
