How many times have we heard this, or used this phrase to reply to someone who wondered how much gold we could make and which is the best way?
Time management is integral to making gold, basically becausewe want to maximise our gold per hour, our bang-per-buck.
Our first lesson is, asPlayer Vs Auction House notes in his blog, why waste time doing boring and repetitive farming, searching for a single item that we need for something, when we can simply buy it on the AH.
He says "Since the AH has plenty at a subjectively reasonable price, if you really want to farm something, thenfarm something worth more- or easier to acquire - than Volatile Fire, sell it, and buy the Volatile Fire."
Multitasking. Right now I'm writing an article at the same time as TSM is scrolling through my 1,000+glyphs searching for undercuts.
In the last few days, I've been cracking out over 5,000g per hour, every hour (which makes my pre-cataclysm 3.4k per day look pretty pathetic!) And so my earnings are really only limited by how many hours I want to work on this. At 5 hours a day, say an hour on each of 5 characters/toons, that's over 9 million gold a year.

With gold becoming so plentiful in Cataclysm, and the goldcap now reaching to 1 million, it's time for us to update our question of "how much gold do you have?" to "how much gold can you make an hour?"
With time now becoming our constraining factor instead of gold, it's essential that wemanage our limited resource. For me, that means chopping up my online time into half hour slots.
Scans for me take two half hour slots, a round of dailies might take one slot with my main, prospecting another slot. Then perhaps I'll be bored and do some farming for a slot, or some enchanting for a 1/2 hour, or shop for resale for half an hour.
Everyone who has any significant amount of gold will tell you
Do not put all your eggs in one basket.
Whilst inscription might pull in gold one week, another week your limited supply comes up trumps, or gem prices might go through the roof offering a new opportunity. And so we vary our routines each week.
Sinshroud of the Consortium says:
"Every successful honest gold maker will be able to tell you that you should never rely too heavily on a single source for your income. Don't ONLY cut JC gems, or don't ONLY farm Volatile Air. Most of the cases you should be combining different gold making techniques, almost like a formula. You can tailor it to exactly fit your available time. For example:
- Monday you have 1 hour to play: so go farm Obsidium and Pyrite Ore.
- Tuesday you have 45 minutes to play: so then use the JC/Ore shuffle technique.
- Wednesday you have all day to play, but want to do heroics and level: so craft inscription glyphs, post them up, play, check back every few hours to relist your undercut auctions
- Thursday is always quiet on your server: so spend some quality time farming Volatile Air.
- Friday ... you get the picture."
