Worms in Dogs: Are Humans At Risk?

Worms in dogs are a common problem for many mutt owners. They must be dewormed by the vet at least once a year, as the parasite can infest them without the dog displaying any symptoms.

The main cause for concern for many is the risk posed to humans by worms, especially if the pet owners have young children. This article will explain why worms in dogs can pose a danger to humans and the situations where we are most at risk.

The risk to children

Unfortunately, the demographic most at risk from worms in dogs are children because their immune systems have not developed as much as adults. Children may also have poorer standards of hygiene, which adds to their susceptibility.

There is nothing wrong with allowing your child to play with your pets and you can't wrap them up in cotton wool. However, what is important is to ensure you teach them to always wash their hands before eating. This will greatly reduce the chances of them catching worms from your pets.

Roundworms & Hookworms

Roundworms are the most common worm type found in pets. Roundworms can only spread to humans if their eggs are ingested. Children are much more likely to inadvertently ingest these eggs when playing in soil and sand.

The other type of worms found in dogs of immediate concern for humans are hookworms. Their eggs are excreted in a dog's faeces and can enter a human via the skin. Again children are highly susceptible as they are likely to walk about barefoot, so can be infected through the soles of their feet.

Can they be fatal?

Although risk of worm infection is low, there are rare cases where a worm infection has been fatal. Luckily treatment is available and very effective. The risk posed to humans (and especially children) by worms in dogs highlights the importance of maintaining a rigorous programme of deworming your pets.
