WORRY

Worry seems like an odd habit to put in a article on "Energy Simulators." Worry, we've all been taught to understand, is one of the prime sources of energy waste. This is true. But worry is also a hidden energy stimulator. Anyone who worries should realize that there is an almost electrical energy that goes into worry sessions. That energy is the raw product for creative thinking, imagination, and problem-solving, if it is properly used. The key is not to stop worrying, but to learn how to use "worry energy" in a positive, constructive manner.

Worry is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as "mental uneasiness or anxiety." This uneasiness is unrelated to anything in the immediate present. It has to do with a future event that the worrier believes, or fears, may come about.

The key element in understanding worry is imagination. Worriers have vivid imaginations. This is both their strength and their weakness, depending upon how it is developed and used.

Imagination. Imagination is the key to any kind of human motivation. Little could be accomplished without it. Even the capacity for self-improvement springs from the imagination. Dugald Stewart says about worry that, "It prevents us from ever being completely satisfied with our present condition and with our past attainments and engages us continually in the pursuit of some untried enjoyment or of some ideal excellence.

Consider other statements about the importance of imagination. "Imagination is more important than knowledge" (Albert Einstein). "Hold a picture of yourself long and steadily enough in your mind's eye and you will be drawn toward it. Picture yourself vividly as defeated and that alone will make victory impossible. Picture yourself vividly as winning and that alone will contribute immeasurably to success. Great living starts with a picture, held in your imagination, of what you would like to do or be. "If you must have a clear mental picture of the correct thing before you can do it successfully.

So imagination is the key to accomplishing anything in life; it is the prime motivator behind human action, more so than will power. It is the major source of mental energy. The French psychologist Emile Coue postulated that, "When the Will tries to overcome the Imagination, the Imagination overcomes the Will." In other words, mental pictures that we habitually hold in our minds serve as goals toward which we automatically strive.

Worriers are people who are making use of this gift of imagination. But they are using it in a nonproductive way. The nonproductive worrier holds a negative image in his mind. And his mind naturally struggles to make that image a reality.

But the fact that worriers have such vivid imaginations means they have a great potential for growth. This same imagination which works so vividly to their disadvantage in a state of nonproductive worry will work just as well to their advantage in a state of problem-solving activity. This is why Maxwell Maltz, in one of his best-selling articles, advises the worrier to set aside time during which he actively, systematically uses his imagination in order to implement his own growth.
