2008 was supposed to be a rebuilding year, but the Atlanta Falcons surprised with an 11-5 campaign. The Falcons weren't able to improve on that mark last year, but they still managed a second straight winning season. In fact, it was the first time Atlanta had ever recorded back-to-back winning seasons. With stars like quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner and wide receiver Roddy White leading the charge, Atlanta should make it three straight winning campaigns. Worst Draft Picks Nba
Offense: Few, if any, teams in the NFL can boast a threesome of skill players like the Falcons have in Ryan, Turner and White. Entering his third season, Ryan shows poise beyond his years. Last season, Ryan's numbers weren't quite as good as they were in 2008 when he took home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, but they certainly weren't indicative of a sophomore slump. I expect the Boston College product to have his best season yet in 2010.
An ankle injury kept Turner from repeating his 2008 performance, when he rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 scores, but he still managed nearly 900 yards and 10 touchdowns in 11 games. When healthy, Turner is an explosive downhill runner.
It was business as usual for White in 2009, catching more than 80 passes for over 1,100 yards for the third straight season.
In addition to Atlanta's terrific trio, Future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, solid No. 2 wideout Michael Jenkins and speedy wideout Harry Douglas give the Falcons three more strong playmakers.
Atlanta also boasts a solid line that returns all five starters.
Worst Draft Picks NbaDefense: This is the side of the football that is standing in the way of Atlanta becoming a Super Bowl contender. While the Falcons have proven they can stuff the run, finishing as a top 10 rushing defense last year, they have not shown that they can control the airways.
With a combination of a poor pass rush and inconsistent coverage in the secondary, Atlanta finished No. 28 in the NFL in passing defense (241.9 passing yards per game allowed).
The Falcons made a move to bring in cornerback Dunta Robinson to shore up the secondary. He is certainly an upgrade, but I'm not sure he is worth six years and $57 million. He is not the same player he was from 2004-2006.
Atlanta really struggled to pressure the quarterback last season, recording only 28 sacks to finish in a tie for 26th in the league. Jonathan Babineaux played very well at the tackle position, recording six sacks, but the Falcons needed more out of their defensive ends. They especially need a bounce back year from John Abraham, who only tallied 5.5 sacks in 2009 after wrapping up the quarterback 16.5 times in 2008.
Because of Atlanta's poor pass defense, it was the worst defensive team in the league on third down. The Falcons allowed the opposition to convert on third down 45.3 percent of the time.
Prediction: 2nd NFC South - An explosive offense can win the Falcons some football games, but it is going to take a better defense to win a championship. The Falcons will be right in the mix in the NFC South, but I fear Drew Brees and the Saints will be able to take advantage of Atlanta's pass defense again this season.
