Worst Drug Epidemic in History Continues

For generations our country has been plagued by the mass addiction to an ever so wretched drug. The basis of the mass addiction to this particular drug is that it can create various different highs for the user depending on their disposition and it takes the place of normal sources of pleasure. It takes the place of pleasure that is gained from close relationships, from personal achievements, and many other experiences. This drug wave has been so prominent that millions of Americans are addicted to it including children, professionals and the elderly.

Places that were long ago gathering places are now empty as most of the communities' members are at home by themselves or in small groups using this drug. This drug has taken the place of enjoyment that is gained from other activities such as sport, adventure, travel, and more. People that try to quit this drug rarely succeed and suffer serious withdrawal symptoms when attempting to do so. This drug has acquired a household name of "T.V." and is surprisingly well accepted despite its' disparaging effects.

Why participate in competitive sports when you can live vicariously through the electronic images displayed in your living room that are generated by this "TV"? Why work hard so you can take a trip to an exotic destination when you can turn on the boob tube and zone out for a few hours? TV feeds on the needs of the human being. Our needs for friends, love, adventure. It gives us an ever-so readily-available false sense of fulfillment. But, as soon as we turn the TV off, we realize it was just an illusion. We realize that we just spent hours of our life achieving absolutely nothing and left with an even bigger hole in our lives. You would think that we'd realize the folly of our ways. Ah, but this is the curse of addiction. The false sense of pleasure is just a click away and we can't help but surrender ourselves to the remote at the next opportunity. The cycle continues.

So I ask you, my fellow Americans, to take the leap in breaking addiction. It will be difficult. People will say you can't do it. People will say you are foolish and that TV has benefits. It provides pleasure, relaxation, and entertainment. You will also tell yourself the same things. But, let me ask you this: When you are on your deathbed and looking back upon your life, will you be happy that you spent 10 years of your life in front of a television? Let me remind you that you spent those 10 years in front of the television instead of doing something else. You had one life that we know of to do anything you wanted with and you chose to spend 10 years of it glued to an electronic box. You could've seen the world. You could've changed the world. You could've left a legacy. You could've grown, built, destroyed, envisioned, experienced, learned, or done anything else your heart desired but you chose to watch television with that time.

TV robs humans of their very essence. It plays on our drives and emotions and provides a false sense of accomplishment. Take the television away and people start to experience life for themselves. That same urge that drove them to turn on the TV for an experience drives them to learn a new instrument, begin participating in a sport, learn a new skill, expand their social endeavors, or start working harder so they can see the world for themselves. It also drives them to write essays to reach out to the world...

Ask yourself if you will be happy when you are on your deathbed and look back and realize that you spent 10 years of your life in front of a TV. I'm not saying I know what your answer is, but I am saying that now is the time to ask yourself this question.
