Wotlk Shaman Tips You Must Know

The Shaman class is an odd bird in the Warcraft universe

, because every talent tree is equally viable, there is no clear "best" spec. So where does this leave the average player? The short answer is to pick the spec that best suits the style of play that you most enjoy. Hopefully this breakdown of their pros and cons can help you to choose. A tip for any spec: use water shield whenever you can.

A focus on offensive spell casting, this is the best spec for players who want to deal devastating blasts at range. Some of the great signature moves of this spec have you casting chain lighting bolts, with the occasional guaranteed lava burst crits. Guaranteed crits being king in PvP. Elemental is my personal favorite. A solid choice for a wizard cleave (spell based damage groups.) Great burst, multi target attacks, awesome defensive powers with improved earthbind totem via the storm, earth, and fire talent. It can pin down all hostiles in the area, giving you the time you need to escape! Another nice thing about elemental is that your heals remain potent enough that as long as you are not under direct fire, you can heal yourself and others effectively, which is awesome for BGs, and offers some extended PvE flexibility. Thunderstorm offers some unique options for getting kills based on your terrain advantage, knocking people flying off a cliff at the lumber mill in Arathi Basin for example. Prone to being overwhelmed by melee targets while the Thunderstorm knockback is on cool down. Not an easy leveling specialization.

Enhancement is the hands-on Shaman damage dealing talent line, considered to be the premier path for quick leveling, this specialization shines in raiding melee cleaves (melee damage groups). A rather unpopular choice though for PvP, as you will find yourself among the least resilient of close quarters fighters unless you reach extreme levels of skill. Your fighting prowess is directly linked to the quality of weapons you can get your hands on. Great for augmenting other melee fighters in your group and fun fast paced action, this spec is for adrenaline junkies. Beautiful flashy moves, and the famous summoned ghost wolves give this style some serious offensive power. Forgoing the use of a shield (as you must to make this tree viable for dealing damage) leaves you quite vulnerable, making for a short lifespan in PvP, and weak to the hazards that a PvE raider would face.

Resto Shaman was at one point the central figure when it came to healers of the Horde. However in recent years with the addition of paladins the horde and a balancing of the factions they play a more relaxed equal role these days. The Alliance is still getting used to working with shaman players, as they are pretty rare ally side. (I am betting we will see a lot more Ally Shaman in Cataclysm when dwarves can become one.) The trademark heal of restoration shamans is arguably chain-heal; a fantastic spell for directing heals to location specific damage spikes. Think for a moment that you see a group of warriors running away a little too slowly from Onyxia's deep breath fire blast, who is most likely to save them? The answer is a Resto shaman, druids HoT spells are too slow and too weak, a priest would have to stand in there with them to get them all, and a paladin saving more than two at once forget it. Ups and Downs of Resto Shaman; on the upside you have powerful directional and single target heals as well as Earth-shield to keep the tank up in PvE, or to keep you standing in PvP. You also have the benefit of being significantly more heavily armored than a priest. The downside, you don't get any of the nice permanent buffs that other classes have. Totems can be helpful but not everyone notices their more subtle benefits. Another weakness that on its own, restoration doesn't have much in the way of dazzling defensive moves.

Elementalists should make use of wrath of air, as the spell haste bonus provided is widely regarded as the best totem for offensive casters and provides a solid boost to grouped healers. Enhancement fighters should practice juggling their earth totems as the situation calls for, strength of earth being the go to choice for when you are not in danger, glyphed stone claw and stone-skin being for situations where you are under pressure. A common mistake committed by newbie resto healers is to use a mana spring totem while a paladin is providing blessing of wisdom, as the two spells don't stack, so you are better off using something else. In general, try to make good use of your grounding totem to absorb incoming spell damage and your healing stream totem to passively assist your groups.

With a reputation as easy targets, shaman have had it rough in on the battlefield for last few years. However mastering the use of your defensive totems, and spells as well as kiting can help stay on your feet and out of the graveyard. First off if you plan to PvP it is near essential to dip into enhancement deep enough to get instant cast ghost-wolf form, adding a glyph to this spell will cause it to heal you as you run making it a near perfect escape/kiting move. Improved and glyphed ghost-wolf form is so good that it is even the envy of druids, the supposed masters of shape-shifting. There are a few survival features in every talent line so don't hesitate to experiment. Dueling is a great way to do stress testing to find what works best for you.
