Would First Aid Have Helped in Good Samaritan Stabbing Incident?
As you probably have heard on the news during the last few weeks
, a good Samaritan saved a woman from being mugged but was then stabbed in the chest immediately after. As this man lay stabbed and bleeding on the street, no one offered to help him or attempted a first aid procedure. Additionally, no calls to 911 were made at this time. Caught on a nearby camera, the incident also revealed that 25 people walked by and no one offered help, with the exception of lifting the victim slightly. By looking at these statements, can you determine if this incident was the result of apathy or simply a general lack of understanding in first aid?
According to a recent blog post by the Red Cross, this incident was the result of the lack of understanding in first aid procedures. Referred to as the "bystander effect," those walking by hope someone with the necessary training comes by and helps the victim, although they themselves don't have the necessary skills to. As first aid procedures, from tending a wound to using a defibrillator and applying CPR, can determine if a person lives or dies in many cases, tending to a victim quick enough often means he or she has a greater chance of survival. Another article backs up this point by indicating that more basic first aid knowledge could save more lives.
In the best case scenario to this incident, a bystander would have been informed of first aid procedures to attend to the victim, would have contacted 911, and, before paramedics arrive, would have used his or
first aid skills to attend to the wound. Although no one can be sure if any bystanders had adequate first aid knowledge, one UK study mentioned in the linked article above states that adults are less likely to help a victim if that person appears homeless, drunk, or on drugs. Considering the victim was homeless in this case, was this incident a combination of a lack of first aid knowledge, apathy, or both?
