Connecticut needed a new image
Connecticut needed a new image. The previous state slogans had been "Better Yet Connecticut" and "Connecticut, We're Full of Surprises" - but neither increased tourism. Because the new governor had come into office promising to raise the tourism profile, a New York agency was hired in 2011; and a 2-year, $27 million campaign was started. Connecticut's new slogan supposedly celebrates the state's spirit of independence and innovation. To compete with "I Love New York" and "Virginia is for Lovers", Connecticut chose "Still Revolutionary". Considering Connecticut is the "Nutmeg State", perhaps its tourism slogan could have been a little ... spicier.
The sophistication of congressional speech making has declined. The open government group the Sunlight Foundation examined the Congressional Record back to the 1990's using the Flesch-Kincaid scale. This scale equates higher grades with longer sentences and words with more syllables. In 2005 Congress spoke at an 11.5 grade level. In 2012 it's a 10.6. It seems as you move away from the political center among the newest members of Congress, the grade level goes down - particularly on the right. Of course, the average reading level of Americans is between 8th and 9th grade; so politicians are still "talking down to us".
People worldwide have remarkably similar eating habits. This was the conclusion drawn by Massive Health's iPhone app, "Eatery" and was based on 500,000 meals eaten by users in 50 countries over 5 months. Meals start out healthy in the morning, but get progressively worse throughout the day. Supposedly, there is a 1.7% decrease in healthiness of what's eaten every hour after breakfast. Maybe there's a lack of healthy food options at night or maybe our willpower succumbs to temptation by night. However, this pattern is the same in Europe, Asia and your hometown. It might be a new world "disorder".
Colored potato chips reduce snacking. In a study published in the Journal of Health Psychology, each student in one group of college students was given a stack of chips with red-dyed, edible-chip dividers interspersed at different intervals - anywhere from every 5 to 14 chips. The other group was given a traditional stack of chips. Inserting the colored chips at regular intervals caused people to eat fewer chips. In fact, the group with the red-chip, serving dividers reduced its chip consumption by 50%. This finding could be applied to other snacks also - as we try to "chip away" at calories.
