Priests in WoW aren't restricted to healer role. Rather, you can turn them into damage dealer machines that quite similar to Warlocks in terms of style and abilities. 1. Race Choice
Racial traits don't really make big differences, but there are several races that can give you some advantages.
Alliance
Dwarf: got Stoneform to get rid of poison, disease, and bleed effects. This is valuable if you're planning to do PvP in the future.
Draenei: have Heroic Presence to improve your hit rate. In addition, they have Gift of the Naaru in case you're use up all your mana.
Horde
Troll: got Berserking, which will increase your attack and casting speed.

2. Talent Tree
When I talked about priest as killing machine earlier, I'm referring to Shadow build. This build will make sure that you can take care of your enemies by yourself, which is great for solo leveling. Keep in mind that you can only see the potential of this build around level 40. At early level, you simply don't have sufficient mana and efficient killing spells, therefore you must take it easy first.
Obviously, you are able to take the Holy tree and make yourself the healer of a team. If you love to team and do instances a lot, you'll see that teaming with a real damage dealer class such as Rogue or Retribution Paladin can give you pretty fast experiences.
If you're going solo, I recommend the Shadow tree, which is the best option for fast solo leveling. These are some of the important talents in this build:
