Figure Drawing

Figure drawing can be tough for the beginner, but it doesn't have to be! Learning a few basic steps, and with proper practice, you can hone your skills as an artist.

Before you begin drawing, it is extremely important to have a frame of reference. While it is certainly a gift to be able to draw from the imagination, when you are dealing with the figure it is imperative that you have a frame of reference. Artists such as Norman Rockwell for example, would take numerous reference photos prior to painting or drawing.

To begin, you will need a few basic materials. These materials are as follows: a number two pencil (or 2b), a plastic eraser, an image of a full body male or female , and good sketching paper. The reason for using a plastic eraser and not a rubber one is that rubber erasers have a tendency to leave unsightly pink smudges and are not nearly as effective in erasing as plastic ones. For your paper the only kind I would not recommend is laser copier paper.A great brand of paper I would recommend is Canson. As you get more into it, you will understand the value of good quality paper to draw on.

Always begin with a sketch, and draw lightly. Sketching allows you to work out any problems with the proportions and placement of features. By drawing lightly while sketching, it helps avoid the grief of a smudged drawing because of dark pencil marks..While you are sketching, draw a straight line from the top of the page to the bottom where the figure will be positioned, this will help you keep things in proportion.

Here are some good tips on drawing the human figure:

The Face/Head

1.Divide the head into equal quadrants.

2.The eye level should be equal distance to the chin

3.The ears are on equal level to the eyes

4.The nose is 1/2 to 1/3 the distance between the eyes and chin

5.The corner of the mouth is equal to the bottom of the ear

Body

1. For men, the upper body shape can be compared to an upside down triangle, wide shoulders, narrow waist and hips

2.For women, the upper body shape can be compared to a pear or hourglass shape, equal shoulders and hips, narrow at the waist

3.The human form is the perfect representation of symmetry, the shoulders and hips are to be parallel, no matter what pose

Hands

1.Hands vary in size, but can be as big as the face.

2.The thumb and pinky may be the same in height, but remember, they are positioned in different ways.

3.Don't forget to draw wrists

Legs and Feet

1.The thighs are longer than the shins, but not by a lot (remember: the femur is the longest bone in the body)

2.Remember the thigh begins at the hip

3.The knees are parallel to the feet and each other

4. The foot is approximately the size of the distance from the wrist to elbow.

In closing, remember to have fun! These tips I have just listed are just the basics, but don't feel limited by what I laid out. Art is expression, and there are many different styles and ways to draw. Finally, practice, practice, practice! Don't feel discouraged if you don't like your work to start off, will improve greatly in time!
