Xbox 360-Battlefield Bad Company 2 (Review)
The class and ranking system is much better, a systematic increase to your weapons and unlocks occur as you rank up, which isn't easy to do unless you work as a team and play in a good squad. There are a lot more
upgrades than in the first Bad Company, but it isn't as confusing as the last shooting games. Squads work very well, especially when you are spawning into a game after dying, you can choose any of your squad mates to spawn in on or you can spawn in at any bases your team holds.
The vehicles are fantastic, they move and turn and operate with a nice speed and feel, you'll be jumping hills and leaving tread marks across your opponents back in no time. The guns are also pretty good, some better than others, the sniper rifles are really well done.
The single player game also got an upgrade, and I really dig it. Not a lot of action but an almost interactive movie experience, which is the future of gaming as far as I'm concerned. There is a lot of over the top language, since the game takes place in a war setting, so you may want to check You Tube to watch some game footage first before you buy it for your under 16 year old.
The single player isn't as long as you like, since you really get into it, waiting to see what's next to drive in or blow up on these beautiful maps, but it's a fun experience for a multiplayer game.
The Battlefield franchise has always just been about multiplayer games, the first few Battlefields didn't even really have a story mode for single player, since the multiplayer was fun enough.
The multiplayer in this year's game is also great, you can play in four modes, gold rush, conflict, a gold rush/conflict combo which is great to see all the maps, and a four squad, every squad for themselves type squad death match that is surprisingly fun.
The only problem with the multiplayer is the server issues again, but that may be an EA thing, this will unfortunately cause some people to stay away from this title. One other small problem is EA's annoying attempt to sway gamers away from renting or buying previously owned titles by forcing them to enter in a "special code" only available if you purchase the game to unlock additional weapons and accessories. This is such a nickel-and-dime tactic similar to what banks and financial companies do with over draft fees and stuff like that, and it takes the fun out of the game and keeps gamers away from EA titles.
DICE Studios did a fabulous job on Battlefield Bad Company 2, now I hope they plan on supporting it with map packs and upgrades, even a nicely done mod pack would be better than trying to dish out a Bad Company 3 next summer.
I have to rate Battlefield Bad Company 2 a must buy for any war game fan, or first person shooter fan, and give it a 4.75 / 5 rating.
4.75 - Graphics
5+ - Sounds
4.5 - Controls
5 - Replay Value
4.25 - Online Multiplayer (Due to horrible EA Servers that crash constantly)
4.75 - Video Game Magic* (Would have been a 5+ if not for EA's nickel-and-dime "special code" entry scam)
*Video Game Magic is the video game's ability to transport you the player into the game experience - usually the effects this has on the human condition are, severe loss of time management, extreme video game jonesing, and an extended altered state of reality.
