The tranquil paradise of Gulangyu Island is known as the Piano Island among many

people due to the local fascination that the islanders have with the piano. It is reputed that one in every five homes on the Island contains a piano, which is an amazing fact considering that the Island covers an approximate area of 1.78 kilometers. One of the most famous attractions of Gulangyu is the Xiamen Piano Museum which lies just off the coast of the Xiamen city. Also known as the Gulangyu Piano Museum, the building contains Asia"s largest piano collection.

The Xiamen Piano Museum enjoys a spectacular location on a lush piece of land that is covered with large tropical trees and colourful flowers. The Museum overlooks the beautiful Shuzhuang Garden and the aquamarine waters of the sea. The building contains 2 main exhibition halls featuring over 30 pianos from places such as Australia, Britain, Austria, France and the United States of America. Many of the pianos that are on display are over a hundred years old, each having its own historical story.

The first exhibition hall at the Xiamen Piano Museum features the Museum"s oldest piano that dates back to the year 1801. This musical instrument was crafted by Muzio Clementi, a renowned musical composer who lived from 1752 to 1832. This hall also contains the world"s tallest piano that was crafted in London in 1824 by Broadwood & Sons. The second exhibition hall showcases the development of this amazing musical instrument over the years. In this section, the famous 1928 Haines piano is a defining exhibition piece. Other fascinating pianos at the Museum include a grand piano that has ivory keys which once resided in a palace, and a piano treasured by Abraham Lincoln.
