In some way it bacame a very modern custom.

The practise of giving presents in Christioan religion is related to a story about three kings from the East, who came to bow to little Jesus Christ. They brought the gifts with them, and those were gold, frankincense and myrrh. So the tradition of giving presents was celebrated on Feast op Epiphany on January the 6th. After time it was related more to Christmas, so present giving time is extended from December the 25th to January the 6th.

The custom of giving gifts wasn't really popular during Middle Ages. It became more and more well-known in the modern era. Mostly due to fact that Christian Church didn't celebrate Christmas that much as it's being done nowadays. The American settlers precticed giving gifts at Chrismas. This custom was very popular in New Amsterdam, the Dutch colony now well known as New York. They "invented" St. Nicholas in the appearance as it is known nowadays. And calld him Santa Claus.

Today, we all give gifts at Christmas for our own reasons. For some, it is a way to celebrate the Christian holy day. For others, it is a special time to let family and friends know that you care by giving gifts.
