Yaounde is the capital of Cameroon and second largest city in the country after Douala. It lies in the centre of the nation at an elevation of about 750 meters (2,500ft) above sea level. Major industries in Yaounde include tobacco, dairy products, breweries, clay, glass goods, and lumber. Visa Issuance for most of European & British Nationals is issued upon arrival but it is mandatory to take permission from "LE DELEGUE GENERAL DE LIMMIGRATION" prior flying to Cameroon. Yaound is served by "Nsimalen International Airport (NSI)" where 6 Commercial & 3 chartered services. The airport has got all the major facilities including post office, bank counters, tourist & visa assistance desks. General Taxis or private cabs can be hired easily from outside airport. Many bus companies operate from the city, particularly in the Nsam and Mvan neighborhoods. Frequent bus runs occur along the road between Yaound and Douala, which has witnessed several fatal accidents. Travel time by road between Douala and Yaounde is approximately 3 hours. Traffic in the city can be heavy during weekdays. Yaound is also linked by rail to Douala.

Places to visit:

The best places are the Mvog Betsi zoo (primates and lions, with a kid's playground), the Mokolo market (very big and in-your-face), Mont Febe, or maybe the swimming pools of some of the hotels.

The city centre houses government offices, some hotels, and the central market. The Bastos neighborhood, with most homes owned by Cameroonians, is home to foreign embassies and the expatriate European community (drawn mainly from the diplomatic corps). The presidential palace and compound is in the Etoudi neighborhood.

There is a small zoo in the Mvog-Betsi neighborhood. Yaounde has a small assortment of nightclubs and restaurants.

When to Visit:

In general the best months to visit are the winter months between November and February, although it is also during that time that the Harmattan haze may periodically obscure the landscape.
