The cosmopolitan city of Bangkok is many things to different people. It is a shoppers' paradise, a phenomenal cultural experience and an electric night out. Yaowarat road is also known as Chinatown Bangkok, owing to the fact that a large portion of Bangkok's Chinese community calls it their home. During the day, it seems like any other road in Bangkok, with street vendors lining the sides of the road, giving it the air of a large open market. But at night, the street explodes in a riot of colour and activity. The road is lit by the neon signs of vendors, who sell products that range from fabrics and ceramics to medicinal herbs to gold and precious gems. While exploring the numerous sights around the area, take time to sample the local cuisine. There are many restaurants to choose from and the fare is exotic and delicious.

You can find a good deal of temples and shrines in and around Yaowarat. Most of them are worth a visit, if you have the time. The best times to tour Yaowarat road, are when functions are celebrated. During Chinese New Year, you can expect to see lion dances and an increase in the number of food stalls. The Mooncake festival is also celebrated in a grand fashion, with Chinese families and friends, gathering to pay their respects to the Goddess of the Moon. Many vendors sell Mooncakes, a dish that comes in a multitude of varieties.
