Yasmin has been marketed as a safe alternative to the previous generation of birth control. Unfortunately, many have come forward and testified that Yasmin might not be as safe as the company marketing has portrayed it to be. As of the writing of this article, there are multi class action lawsuit against Yasmins manufacturer for injuries incurred as a result of taking the birth control. Unfortunately, despite many examples of a possible dangerous link to Yasmin, the FDA has failed to act and remove Yasmin from the market. They have not advised the public about possible side effects that are not mentioned in the medicines literature. If you are on Yasmin or are considering it, just be aware of the adverse affects you may incur as a result New lawsuits have been brought forth alleging that since Yasmin has been offered on the market, it has been responsible for the deaths of as many as 50 people. It also is apparently responisble for thousands of health inquiries due to complications when taking the hormonal birth control pill. According to reports, patients with previously exisiting conditions such as chronic hypertension, diabetes and other kidney related ailments are at great risk of the possible side effects of Yasmin. Yasmin is an oral hormonal birth control pill developed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. It uses a combination of two hormones. The hormones Yasmin uses are drospirenone and ethinylestradiol. The complications from Yasmin usage seem to arise from the drospirenone component. When drospirenone is synthensized by the human body, it results in a rise in blood level potassium. Potassium is an important electrolyte which controls many things in the human body. One very common and often fatal result of a heightened potassium level is blood clots. Other Complications arising from increased potassium levels in the blood include deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, blood clots and renal complications. Along with the physical complications of Yasmin, there are many questions about the ethical nature of the marketing aspects. Bayer has been twice reprimanded by the FDA about the claims they have made about their products safety in comparison to other birth control drugs offered on the market. The FDA's latest warning to Bayer was regarding the deception in television ads. In the ads, Yasmin is promoted as very effective with little side effects. The findings also state that the deceptive ad campaign led women to falsely believe that Yasmin would cure symptoms for which its' use was not approved for. Bayer was ordered to spend $20 million on an ad campaign to inform the public of the true facts about Yasmin. They must submit the ads to the FDA for vetting before they are allowed to air the ad.
