Yellow Jackets

Seems like just when people think they can get a break from Mother Nature at the end of summer

, the yellow jackets get ready to be a pain in people's lives, and a fatal risk to some! Yellow jackets are black and yellow and usually a lot larger than the average bee. Unlike honeybees, yellow jackets, and all other wasps and bees for that matter, can sting over and over again, so they can be particularly dangerous - makes sense why people want it to be their school mascot so often!

Starting in May and continuing over the summer, mated females whove been hibernating all winter establish new nests and can have up to 120,000 little stingers by the fall! Luckily nature has the last say with those slightly cooler temperatures we call winter, but its a scary sight in many Alabama neighborhoods in August either way. Yellow Jackets primarily like to live underground, but their nests can also end up inside trees and even inside that old project car youve have in the barn yes INSIDE the car.

So as you can imagine, its necessary to prepare for the onslaught. Just like any other bugs, make sure all those entry points are closed off. Pay special attention to closed off spaces and any structural damage to your house or other structures. But make sure you never caulk close an entrance to an yellow jacket nest in a structure. Theyll only make your life worse as they find every little hole they can to get out of that space including coming into the interior of your house.

Professionals and researchers say the best way to manage yellow jackets is a dust applicator and constant treatment over the summer. The dust rides the wind into the nooks of their nests and into concealed areas where theyre likely to land. Remember to call a pest control professional that has experience handling these serious chemicals because things can go wrong quickly if not done right! Theyll most likely need to come at night because these suckers dont go down without a fight! Also, if theyre inside your house or the walls of your house, you and your family will probably have a forced vacation in a local hotel or family members house for a day or two.

Another option, of course, is do nothing and wait it out. If its not near an area where people ever go, its probably not worth all the trouble to take care of something which nature already has on lockdown -- when it gets cold the nest will disintegrate and youll get your old car back. Just make sure you take care of sealing off that space before next May or youre back in the same boat. Prevention is the name of the game when it comes to yellow jackets. Take the time to seal up those holes and keep garbage cleaned up and in a covered container. Youll be amazed how a little bit of regular maintenance will dramatically change the situation.
