Yesteryear Star of Bollywood - Waheeda Rehman

Waheeda Rehman is an excellent yesteryear actress, known for enacting her roles with finesse. She is considered to be one of the most famous movie stars of the Indian Film industry. She hails from a conventional Muslim family, which resided in Chengalpattu, a city in Tamil Nadu.

Acting in what was known as the golden era of the Hindi movie industry, she made a mark for herself with her brilliant performance. Although, her ambition was to be a doctor, her ill health did not permit her to do so. But Waheeda Rehman had taken training to be a Bharatanatyam dancer. With the help and support from her parents, she acted in almost four movies in Chennai. In her movie Rojulu Marayi, she did a folk dance, which became an instant hit.

When she was enjoying the success of her films in Hyderabad, she was roped in by Guru Dutt for his film CID to play the role of a vamp. When this movie became commercially successful, Waheeda Rehman was roped in for the lead role in Pyaasa (1957). She started keeping distance from Guru Dutt after the release of Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), as there were rumors about them having a relation.

But, they got back together in the 1960 movie Chaudhvin Ka Chand. Dutt and Waheeda acted together in one more film named Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. This movie was not received well at the Berlin Film Festival.

She performed in several hit films directed by other popular film makers after Guru Dutt's death. Her role in Guide, won her rave reviews and the Filmfare Award for best actress. Neel Kamal released in 1968 was also another large hit. She bagged the National Award for best actress for the film Reshma Aur Shera, though some of her Hindi films could not succeed. She got married to Kamaljit who acted with her in Shagun. She gave birth to Kashvi and Sohail.

After a long gap of twelve years, Waheeda Rehman started acting when she shifted to Mumbai after the death of Kamaljit. She chose to perform roles of grandmother and mother. Her films Om Jai Jagdish, Rang De Basanti, Water and Delhi 6 are received well by the audience.

Waheeda participated in audience discussion about her most triumphant movies in a Waheeda Rehman film presentation. Though her most of her fans still consider Khamoshi as her most successful movie, there are a lot of others who can never forget her graceful performance in other films such as Teesri Kasam, Guide and Pyaasa.
