Yin Yang Huo - Aphrodisiac And Libido Enhancer

Yin Yang Huo is the Chinese medicinal name for several species of plants of the genus Epimedium which are known in the West by several names, including Barrenwort, Rowdy Lamb Herb and (most notably) Horny Goat Weed. Most species of Horny Goat Weed are native to China, although some can be found as far afield as south eastern Europe and western and southern Asia.

Horny Goat Weeds are perennial plants that produce a range of attractive foliage and flower colours. Most species are forest-floor dwellers and require damp, nutrient rich soils to thrive, although some are very hardy and can tolerate fairly dry soils so long as they have enough shade. Although popular as ornamental plants for centuries in Japan, they have only recently become popular with gardeners in the West.

Horny Goat Weed is so called because of the legend that a Chinese goat herder's animals became somewhat amorous after being allowed to graze the plant. Whether or not this legend is true, Yin Yang Huo has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and in traditional Indian medicine as an aphrodisiac, and it is for this reason that the plant is now popular in the West.

Because of its increasing popularity and wide availability in health food stores and online, Yin Yang Huo has come under quite a lot of scrutiny and has been widely studied. It is thought that the plant's purported aphrodisiac properties are due to compounds known as icariins produced by the plant. In high enough concentrations, these icariins have an effect upon the blood capillaries in the gonads and pelvic regions, causing them to dilate and thus carry more blood. This action heightens sensitivity in these regions, leading to an increase in pleasure before and during sex.

Because of the variability in the amount of icariins contained in samples of dry Yin Yang Huo, the dry herb is not usually sold on its own and is often refined to produce a standardized extract before being sold. It is unlikely that dry powders of Yin Yang Huo will have any noticeable effect, and consumers should be wary of purchasing Yin Yang Huo in dry or powdered form when concentrated extracts are so readily available. Extracts produced for commercial purposes vary in strength from 5% up to 60% icariins.

When used to produce aphrodisiacs and performance enhancing supplements, Yin Yang Huo extract is often blended with other herbs noted for their effect upon sexual arousal and response, such as Tongkat ali.
