Yippee!! Its Halloween all over the world (including Ecuador):
Its Sunday, October 30th and we have just enjoyed a great Halloween party here in Cotacachi, Ecuador. It was brilliantly organized by a number of caring expats for the benefit of the children of our employees (gardeners, maids, restaurant servers etc) who take great care over us here in the peaceful Andean town of Cotacachi. What a success this turned out to be just watching these young children having a wonderful time doing something totally new to them and really appreciating everything we had done on their behalf. All in all a BRILLIANT DAY!!
And then I came home, turned on to Fox News on DIRECTV (yes we have US TV here!) and was horrified to see the appalling weather hitting the Eastern seaboard- severe snow storms, power outages, trees down everywhere, a total nightmare and my heart goes out to all of those people , especially the children, having to endure this unforgiving weather.
Traditionally, October is the WORST month of the year, weather-wise, here in Ecuador, and here I am at 6pm in the evening, sitting at my laptop in the warm sunshine, writing this blog. Yes, we have had rain this month, sometimes quite heavy, but nothing serious and mostly late pm or during the night. If this is the worst months of the year then frankly BRING IT ON!! You see, everything here on the Equator is in moderation, we do not have hurricanes or tornadoes EVER, winds very rarely go above 25 mph and the rain is most welcome as it keeps this country very fertile.
The only issue some places in Ecuador have to contend with is the occasional earthquake (one since 2009) and they are not a real issue as they are well away from where we are located. That said, we take that problem seriously and as a result are building our complex using the latest technology which is designed to withstand earthquakes up to 10 points on the Richter Scale which is higher than anything experienced here in Ecuador- EVER!! - Dont worry, this isnt California!
And of course, its not just the weather that makes this country so wonderful. Watching the news on TV about the economic climate in the USA, UK and Europe , the wars in the middle East etc. makes us realize how extremely lucky we are to be living here in Ecuador. You see, unlike the so called 1st World which is totally under the control of central Government, here in Ecuador we have minimal central Government control and more local Government intervention which of course makes sense as they LIVE HERE and totally understand the needs of those living here - not perfect but SO MUCH BETTER trust me!!
Another thing that really struck home with me tonight. One of our neighbors had a medical issue which could have been critical. We called the local doctor who showed up at the patients home 30 minutes later (leaving her family Halloween party to do so) called the hospital for a special kind of medication and stayed with the patient until the medication was delivered. And she did not leave until the medication took effect and sorted out the issue - hows that is for medical attention, can you see that happening where you live??
Frankly, when it comes to lifestyle give me Ecuador anytime - we may be a small , insignificant country but the quality of life here is far superior and healthier than any other lifestyle that I have experienced in all of my 70 yrs on this earth- WITHOUT EXCEPTION!!
