Yonghe Gong The Vibrant Culture Of Beijing

The first thing that many notice about Beijing is the colour and ornate designs in many of the city's most prominent ancient landmarks

. This colourful grandeur is very much a part of China's culture and identity. Many of these ancient landmarks that portray such splendour are those of religious importance and are popular sites among visitors who want to explore the country today. One such thrilling place to visit is the Yonghe Gong, a lamasery that has been a home for Tibetan Buddhist monks for centuries. It is widely agreed upon that this is a must visit place when travelling to the city.

The majestic complex was once a residence of the emperor, and after its inception in 1694 it served this purpose for about half a century. It later became the national centre for Lama Administration, and a place of great national importance. The beautiful architecture seen here is an interesting infusion of Mongolian and Tibetan styles with the native Chinese, and will amaze those who see it. The temple is maintained by the resident monks, who conduct religious services here. The set of buildings that form the complex are a magnificent sight for the colourful designs that adorn them and the yellow tiled roofs. The courtyards and attractive incense burners add to the beauty of the place.

One of the finest attractions that bring visitors to the temple, other than the beauty of the place and the peaceful ambiance, is the remarkable 18 metre high statue of the Buddha found in the last of the five main halls. What is interesting about this statue is that it has been carved out of a single sandalwood log from Tibet. In another hall visitors will find interesting portraits and a bronze statue of the founder of this sect of Buddhism. In addition to these there are a host of other statues, carvings, murals and paintings to be admired here. The site lives up to its name, 'Palace of Peace and Harmony', and must be visited by those who want to experience the culture of the city in its authenticity.

Visitors who want accommodation that offers a truly magnificent experience can stay at 5 star hotels in Beijing, such as the exemplary Raffles Beijing Hotel. This Beijing hotel offers a truly luxurious setting and its location close to many of the city's most thrilling sights is bonus.
