For the worldwide culture buffs Beijing, China is like a treasure trove
, providing countless examples to get a high dose of cultural experiences. The city is also teeming with hundreds of temples flanked by some of the most amazing temples known throughout the world. Beijing temples basically disseminate Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist concepts.
Your Beijing tour wont be complete if you dont step into one of these amazing temples and experience the peace and tranquillity they offer. One of the most frequented temples in Beijing include the Temple of Heaven, Dongyue Temple and Confucius Temple. But dont forget to add one more temple to your itinerary that will let you have a glimpse of the world of Tibetan Buddhism. This is the Yonghe Lamasery of Beijing, known by names such as Lama Temple as well as Yonghe Temple.
Yonghe Lamasery rests on the Yonghegong Street that runs along the north eastern end of Beijing. The building of Lama Temple was initially built by Emperor Kangxi in 1694 as the residence of Yinzhen, his son. When Yinzhen formally became a prince the mansion was christened as the Residence of Prince Yong.
Later when Prince Yinzhen became Emperor Yongzheng reserved part of his residence exclusively for the use of the Lamas, the teachers of Tibetan Buddhism. In 1725 a fire devastated portion of the building leaving only the area that was occupied by the Lamas. Since then the remaining building became known as Yonghe Lamasery.
If you are interested in Asian or Chinese arts and architecture a visit to Yonghe Lamasery is a must. Starting from its exterior which is remarkable to say the least, the temple is designed along an axis that runs from north to south. It houses five main halls sandwiched between charming courtyards. Every nook and corner of these buildings from the top of their roofs to the tip of their bases is covered in striking motifs and ornate decor.
In these halls you will find images of many Buddhas and arhats who were Buddhas disciples besides the four heavenly kings. Yonghe Lamasery even has a three storey high pavilion that houses thousands of Buddha images flanking a massive Maitreya Buddha image.
The statues you find at the premises are made of various materials including gold, silver, bronze as well as iron, tin and copper. There are also images carved off red and white sandalwoods. The eminence of their craftsmanship is so high that three of these statues have even entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
You do not need to be an art lover to be enchanted by this amazing Lama Temple. Just step in to the premises and youll be overwhelmed by an endless streak of inspiration. Book a cosy
