You Can Learn Japanese Faster By Knowing More Vocabulary
Most people place emphasis on learning how to speak when they are learning Japanese
. While I dont deny its important to know how to speak the language, its equally crucial to know more vocabulary. You cant always speak the language with the limited words in your database. It would seem monotonous if you keep repeating the same limited words that you know.
I admit that memorizing vocabulary is the least enjoyable thing to do when learning Japanese. Who wants to go through a list of unfamiliar words that one wont be able to remember in a short period of time? Many people avoid memorizing new words because of this simple fact. I think this is a universal problem when learning a new language.
However, if you have a vast knowledge of Japanese vocabulary, you will soon find that you can actually speed up your learning process. Perhaps its because you can absorb quickly on the things that you read and thus increase your learning speed. I have seen people having great improvement in their Japanese by putting hard work to gain new vocabulary. At the same time, these people become very eloquent in speaking Japanese.
The more vocabulary you know, the more benefits youll gain. Here are some of them:
1. As mentioned earlier, youll speak more eloquently with more vocabulary in your conversation. I have seen these happening among some of my friends who have studied Japanese with me.
2. You can express much better, both in writing and speaking if you possess a rich set of Japanese vocabulary.
3. You can easily pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which is a test for non-native speakers to measure their proficiency of this language. As time is a critical factor in this test, your rich knowledge of Japanese words will help you to speed up reading and understanding of the questions. This will eventually lead to a better performance in the test. I said this based on my personal experience.
So how are you going to add more vocabulary to your database?
You should find things that interest you the most so that you wont get bored. One way is to read more story books, novels or articles written in Japanese. You may see many unfamiliar words while you are reading, but somehow you are able to guess the meanings of those words correctly from the context and storyline. The more books you read, the more vocabulary youll accumulate. I have benefited from this method personally as I like to read Japanese mystery novels.
You can also acquire more words by listening to your favorite Japanese songs. People feel most relax when they are listening to music. By doing so, the lyrics will get into your memory subconsciously. After repeating the song for several times, you will be able to sing along without looking at the lyrics again. And thats how you can memorize new words through singing.
One more thing I love to do is watching Japanese dramas. This is another good way to gain vocabulary in a more relaxing manner. I like to listen to how the actors or actresses talk in the dramas. Besides learning how they pronounce the words, you can learn many new words that you wont be taught in the textbooks. I always have this feeling that my vocabulary database has expanded again after watching one episode of drama.
In summary, the best way to increase your vocabulary is to learn through things that interest you. You wont feel bored when you are learning this way.
