A shelf is a shelf is a shelf, right? Not at all! Wall shelves can be found in so many kinds, shapes, shapes, colours and styles and are therefore very versatile items that can be quite versatile, op top of being functional!

If you just give it some thought and allow your inner-designer to step forward, you can quickly turn a boring shelf into an eye-catching feature at your house!

Before selecting a trolley full of racks and start putting a shelf on every open space you can find, you first need to take a step back again and assess your needs. Decide what the main objective of the shelves will be - are you looking for storage space or for a shelf to jazz up a dull corner of your lounge room? What style have you got in mind? Are you going to opt for practical, or rather for "wow, that's amazing"?

Then walk through your house and carefully study each wall in every room to ascertain where you will be able to put in a shelf or two. I've never heard anyone complain about having too much packing or storage space available, so if you have numerous bare walls, be thankful and make the most of it!

Starting with your living room, you can buy a handful of floating shelves and mount them at different heights on the wall. Place an exceptional family photo or a fancy ornament on each and you have just turned a boring wall into a sure discussion starter.

No kitchen area can ever have enough shelf space. Kitchen areas shouldn't have numerous ornaments and decorations hanging everywhere. If you think that you do not have enough cabinet space, you can add several loose shelves to the wall and display your collection of herbs and spices on them. Or you can hang a few shelves of equal length above each other in a cupboard to quickly create more storage or packing space.

Another shelf or two in a bathroom can also go along way, particularly if you are already battling to find space for your bath towels, scented candles and bubble bath! Not only will you be able to save space, your guest will think that you have just put up the shelf for ornamental purposes.

The childrens' rooms are next. Do you battle to get to their beds to kiss them goodnight as you have to fight your way through an assortment of soft toys, Lego, puzzles and other gadgets? This can quickly be sorted out with shelves! Not only will the toys be off the floor, but the children will be delighted as you can now display all their best friends in one row. Organized in a matter of minutes!

If you have a lock up garage area, you can also hang some shelves there. Garden equipment, cool boxes and other items that you don't use often can be kept in the garage until required.

With a bit of creativity and a couple of shelves, you can quickly take care of your mess!
