You Can Quit Smoking Without Gaining Weight
As if quitting smoking wasn't hard enough, not only do you have to deal with cigarette
cravings; now you have to deal with other cravings to fill the void. But, there is a silver lining in the fear when you
quit smoking and weight gain; on average, most people only gain 6-8 pounds. Now this is hardly a mountain too high to overcome, especially if you've passed the hardest test, which is quitting smoking in the first place. Remember, there are no eay ways to quit smoking, but like anything else; the hard work you put in will pay huge dividends in the long run.
First, you need to understand how smoking affects your body.
Smoking activates your metabolism. If you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, you will burn about 250 calories. So, immediatley if you quit, your body has to deal with these extra calories. One way to offset this is to change your eating habits BEFORE you
quit smoking. If you start eating healthier before you quit smoking, your body will have already shed these calories and the transition won't be drastic. Instead of reaching for foods high in fat and sugar, you should start eating more fruits and vegetables. Instead of chips; eat a banana. Also, eat foods high in fiber, as you will feel more full for longer periods of time. It's all about the choices you make. You should consider this change in diet anyway, since you are embarking a new healthy lifestyle.
Changing what you eat is going to be the biggest factor in not gaining weight when you quit smoking. One of the easiest ways to do this, is to make better decisions when you're at the grocery store. Learn how to read labels. Buy items that are low in fat and sugar. These two things are the biggest cause of gaining weight. If you make these choices at the store, you won't have the opportunity to make bad decisions when get home.
*TIP: Keep your grocery shopping to the outer isles of the store(i.e the deli and the produce section,etc). These are the fresehest and the healthiest items in the store. Items that are stored in the inner isles(i.e boxed and canned foods) are processed and full of preservatives!
Just like anything else, you need to make eating healthy a habit. Once you get used to making those choices, they get easier as time goes by. In most of the people I work with, it seems to take a month or so to adjust, but when they do, they really enjoy the new healthy person they've become.
Now, You need to exercise!
I'm not going to tell you that you need to become a gym rat to keep from gaining weight. But, you do need to exercise at least 3 times a week. Even if it's taking a brisk walk around a park, it's much better than sitting on your couch watching television! You may find that, at first, exercise may be tough on you, especially if you don't do it regularly now. But as with everything else, your body will adjust, and most often quickly. You will soon find that your 3 day a week, 20 minute walk will become boring. Great! Now cahange it up! Add a day to your workout,or walk 30 minutes instead of 20. Keep changing your workout so your body can't get used to it. Keep doing this and you will see results quicker than you imagined.
You may not like all the exercises you do, and that's fine. Find out which workuts you enjoy and stick with those. You need to make it fun, so you look forward to your daily exercise. You will see, that once you make the change to a healthy lifestyle, you won't have to worry about those cigarette cravings again! You will feel so good, it won't even cross your mind.
So keep your eyes on the prize! You can
quit smoking without gaining weight. You just need to remian dedicated and motivated!
