You Might Be Taking Drugs That Can Lead To Osteoporosis
Its no wonder that 10 million Americans are already diagnosed with the osteoporosis
while 34 million more are at risk many factors can lead to the development of the said brittle bone disease. And the numbers continue to rise as recent studies revealed how
high cholesterol can contribute to osteoporosis in aging women. Lets not forget about several medicines that are widely used can also hasten the thinning of the bones.
By now, most of us are already aware how drugs like steroids or corticosteroids, thyroid medications, antacids with aluminum can cause rapid bone loss. Apart from that there are still a lot of medications that may lead the decline of the bone density of a person.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This group of drugs work by hampering the production of gastric acid. This mechanism makes them highly effective in preventing or treating peptic ulcers and acid reflux disorders. It has been noted, however, that long-term use of these drugs may increase the risk of developing osteoporosis-related fractures on the hips, wrist, or spine.
Antibiotics. It is fascinating that studies aiming to determine the relationship between osteoporosis and the use of antibiotics reveal different conclusions. One study claims that the use of antibiotics over a long course can result to severe osteoporosis while another study points that antibiotics do help in treating bone loss. For the time being that the actual link has not been discovered, it is advisable to regularly check your bone mineral density especially if you are taking antibiotics over some time.
Loop Diuretics. These are approved prescription drugs for patients with hypertension or congestive heart failure. Loop diuretics interfere with bone development as they tend to increase calcium excretion of the kidneys. The most widely used brands of loop diuretics are Lasix, Bumex, Edecrin, and Demadex.
Since there are still more medications that may lead to bone loss, it is advisable to always read the medication guide and ask your doctor about the possible side effects of the drugs youre taking. Osteoporosis remains to be one of the most debilitating diseases and its most widely recommended treatment, Fosamax, has been known to yield severe adverse effects especially to its long-term users. A number of offended patients have arranged a
Fosamax lawsuit against the drug company after allegedly missing to properly inform its patients about the risk.
