The key is to optimize your website and the pages within your site, for various search terms (keywords) that people use to find information that pertains to your website.

The actual optimization begins before you even have a name for your website. In fact, researching what you will name your website is where it starts. Pretend you have a business selling antique furniture. If you were to name your domain, http://thisismyfirstbusinesswebsite.com, as a way to highlight your off the wall personality, you would be shooting yourself in the foot, from an SEO point of view. It would be far better to have something pertaining to antique furniture in the name.
