You Really Can't Go Wrong With Effectively Presented Sales Jokes

A little humour can be a powerful thing

A little humour can be a powerful thing. It can make us feel better, remember things more clearly, build stronger relationships and just plain make life better. As a sales person you come into contact with people every day that could use a good chuckle. Why not try to give them one by incorporating sales jokes and other humour about sales into your day-to-day approach?

If your first reaction is that you would never be able to use sales jokes effectively then you need to think again. While you may not wind up being a professional comic, it is possible to learn to have the timing and delivery you need to make it work. There are lots of resources out there than can give you the confidence you need to use humour effectively. If you like to teach yourself then you can use books and online tutorials along with practice in front of the mirror to hone your skills.

If you prefer to learn in a classroom setting or with an instructor then you can visit one of the professional sales training centres in your area. Either way, you can learn what you need to know.

As with any technique there are do's and don'ts. The first big don't is don't use sales jokes that are framed in a context that includes politics, race, religion or other sensitive topics. It doesn't matter how funny you think it is if it offends someone. The other don't is don't use adult sales jokes. Adult material can get you into big trouble no matter how well the joke is delivered.

Above all, keep your audience in mind. There is a time and place for everything and just because something is funny doesn't mean it isn't professional. You are still working and you should keep this in mind.

One type of sales joke or other material that can be safe and effective is humour that pokes fun at you. Self deprecating jokes, as long as they aren't taken too far, can give people an impression that you are self confident and sure of yourself. People will laugh with you which works to help them accept you. If they accept you then chances are they will be more accepting of your message.

Whether you are poking fun at yourself or relating a story, you have plenty of material to select from ... a whole lifetime of it. The most effective material has a personal connection to you rather than being pulled from the Internet. If you got it in an email then chances are your audience did to.

You want something fresh and different, not a rehash of an old joke. You may also be able to get material from friends, colleagues or family. Again, the point is to make your humour fresh with your own personal spin on it.

As you toy with the idea of starting to incorporate sales jokes into your sales presentations remember that you have research on your side. Humour that is delivered in the right way at the right time is almost always a good thing. Not only will your customers or other audience members get a good chuckle out of it but you may too.

In the end laughter is, of course, the best medicine.
