You're going to build a shed, but are you ready to answer these 5 questions
?
For the most people reading this it will be the first shed they are going to construct. I can already see the frustration fuming from your head if you start right away without a solid action plan. Take out pen and paper and answer the questions below. Take your time, if you build it right, it will survive many, many winters.
1.So, what is the shed for?
Is it solely for your garden equipment or is it possible that your lovely family members are going to want to stuff their sports equipment, christmas decoration, bikes etc in there? In other words, is it going to be YOUR shed or the family shed? Once you found the answer, make it a rule to let it stay that way. I know, easier said than done. :-)
2. How big do you want it to be?
You know what's going to go in, now plan it generously. If only your garden items will go in, remember you will buy things you don't even know existed today and won't need, I know I did. But a lot of the fun of gardening is trying out these new, weird gadgets and one of them might stick. Oh and by the way, if it's going to be the family shed, you can never build it too big, no way you will build another one next year. Or will you?
3.Where is its home going to be?
Of course its site is something to think about. Put it somewhere accessible without having to walk through your strawberry field to access it. A corner in your garden is always a good idea, so it doesn't crash with your future landscaping plans.
If your planned size and the planned positioning doesn't fit you will have to compromize. Ah, life is so cruel sometimes.
4. What about those laws?
Get to know your local laws. Are you allowed to build one or are the city officals coming in after you completed your shed and tearing it down. That would be uncool. Usually you don't need a building permit and don't get in any troubles if you stay within a specific size. If it is going to be a sizable shed you might have to ask them for approval.
5. Where are those beautiful building plans?
You've answered most of the questions, now get some high quality shed plans, roll up your sleeves and get to work.
