You've Played Some Beginner Guitar Songs, But Do You Need Natural Ability To Progress Further
?
If you once started learning guitar chords and then stopped before you got very far, you certainly are not alone. In fact, you probably know many people who have 'dabbled' with playing an instrument at some stage of their lives, but never actually became proficient at it. When I look at my own family during my childhood and into adult life, I can remember violins, clarinets, keyboards, harmonicas and banjos (as well as, of course the guitar) being played by one or another of my relatives. But I can only recall one cousin who seriously played bass in a band - and even he stopped eventually to take up a 'real' job. When people struggle to make progress on the guitar one of their thoughts is invariably that it's just that they don't have the natural talent for it. They see Eddie Van Halen or Stevie Vai and assume these guys had an unerring natural ability to just be able to play. That's simply not true. Remember, we only see these people once they are already on their way to mega stardom. But for nearly each and every guitarist who made it, you would find tales of true dedication that put them where they are today. Practicing some eight hours a day, almost every day of the week, during their teenage years is the sort of work that was required to put them in the place where they are now seen as heroes. And although this can seem scary to mere mortals, it does reveal one important thing: - anyone can actually learn to progress from guitar beginner to guitar hero. Natural talent does not even come into the equation. Now, I'm not saying here that just everyone can make it. What I am saying is that the ability to play the guitar is not a God-given gift. It is feasible that anyone with the right attitude, and following a correct path, can become absolutely proficient at the instrument. What they then do with that talent is, by and large, up to them. That's why it's important to follow a proper program of guitar tutorials. A correctly structured series of lessons can put you in the position where you move from a so-so guitarist treading water, to one who develops skills in a natural way, bit by bit building on techniques and theory in order to make real progress. Only you know if you have the desire and dedication to commit to a grueling practice regime - ideally, on a daily basis - and give yourself the opportunity to take your guitar playing wherever you want it to go.
