Your Beats Need Attitude

Attitude Makes Your Beat Stand Out

Attitude Makes Your Beat Stand Out

Now that you can make beats on your PC that sound like they were recorded in a professional studio, you need to make sure your beats have the attitude that the pros give their beats.

There is no specialization in art, not in principle at least. All art is about abstract communication on a higher level. In other words, whether it is looking at Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" and getting the feeling like you know these people in the picture or hearing a gritty east coast hip hop beat and feeling like you know what it means, art is the same.

All art needs attitude in order to communicate something to its viewers or listeners. If it fails to do that it fails as art. So it must be with your beats. Your beats need to tell you story, your emotions, your abstract message to your listeners.

Attitude Starts With Self Awareness

Before you create a beat, you need to have an idea what you want to tell your listeners. Are you angry? Are you happy? Are your mourning? Or are you celebrating. Once you have determined what it is you want to communicate, it is time to break out your beat maker and begin making a beat with attitude.

As you work your way through the beat making process, think of your instruments and the tones they make as colors with which you are painting a sound picture. If you have lyrics already written keep those in mind as you work.

Throw Out Everything

Throw out everything that you are not 100% sure supports what you are trying to say. In music production, less is very often more. Each sound by itself may seem really cool but when you put them together in a mix they just sound muddled. Keep your beat clean

With the art of writing, cutting out all of the extra words in your composition is paramount to making it clean and bright. The same goes with beatsmake them shine. When you are finished making your beat let it set for a day or 2 and then listen to it again with fresh ears. Try to be a listner rather than a beat creator. If there are prats of the beat that you even question just a little, trim out some of the samples until it is clean and clear.

The most important thing to do with all of this is to find your own voice that speaks you own beats and not just a copy of someone else's beats. They have already spoken. It is now your turn to have your voice heard.
