Your Dog May Be Costing You More Than You Think- A Look At Some Of The World's Most Expensive Dogs by:Nicolette Craig

If you ever thought that the only cost to you from your dog was its food

, you may be surprised to see how much a dog can cost over its lifetime. This article looks at the average cost of dogs from the world's most expensive ever dog right through to such more common place dogs.

Back in 2009 a Tibetan mastiff sold for an astonishing 352,000. 'Yangtze River Number Two' was 18 months old and 80cm tall and bought by a Chinese woman who organised a motorcade of 30 limousines to fetch the dog from the airport.

That same year, a family in Florida paid $155,000 (90,000) for their Labrador called 'Lancelot Encore' after it was cloned by a biotech firm BioArts from their old dog 'Lancelot'.

Admittedly, these are not the average dogs that you see adverts for in your local pet supplies shop, but you might be surprised at the amount of money it takes to keep the average dog over the course of its life time.

Based on the initial cost of the puppy, veterinary costs, dog food (http://www.swellpets.co.uk/dog/dog-food-698.html), grooming, kennels and insurance, a list compiled by a pet insurance company found that the most expensive dog to keep was the Chihuahua averaging its owners a massive 88,000 over the course of their 13 year life-span. The desire of their owners to provide their dogs with only the best quality food, expensive jeweled collars, designer outfits and bespoke dog beds(http://www.swellpets.co.uk/dog/dog-beds-1123.html) means that this breed cost nearly three times that of the average pet.

Following close behind the Chihuahua, was the greyhound with a lifetime bill of 82,797, and the mastiff, which costs 81,619. The boxer was a distant fourth at 49,896 with the English setter just behind at a cost of 49,548. Interestingly, the English setter had the most expensive vet bills costing their owners nearly 600 a year with trips to the vets alone.

Of course, these figures are based on UK prices; in the US the cost of puppies can be far more than in the UK with Rottweiler puppies costing anything from $10,000- $15,000 and Yorkshire terriers coming in at a massive $4000- $7,000. Whichever way you look at it, people are willing to spend A LOT of money on their pets!
