Your Dog Should Avoid these People Medicines
If you have a dog, you might be wondering what, if any, human medicines are safe for your dog. If your dog has a toothache, can you use over-the-counter tooth numbing gels? Can you give him aspirin or acetaminophen for arthritis pain? What about human indigestion remedies? While you should ask your veterinarian about treating any specific health conditions your dog may have, the following will give you a guideline of what is, and is not, safe for your dog.
The following drugs are NEVER safe, under any conditions. If a drug is not listed here, you should not assume that it is safe; consult your veterinarian. These drugs can cause serious injury or illness, and they can even be fatal.
* Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
* Acetaminophen of Paracetamol (Tylenol)
* Alcohol
* Benzocaine (a topical pain reliever)
* Phenolphthalein (a laxative)
* Iron supplements
* Vitamin D supplements
* Asthma medications
* Coffee and tea (due to the caffeine content)
* Marijuana or other illegal drugs
These drugs are generally considered safe for dogs:
* Buffered Aspirin can be used for pain relief and as an anti-inflammatory. The recommended dosage is 5 mg for every pound of body weight, given every 12 hours.
* Vitamin B can be given as an appetite stimulant. The dosage is 1/2 ml to 2ml injected under the skin every 24 hours.
* Benadryl or its generic versions are used to treat allergies and itching. Give 1/2 mg per pound every 8 hours, with a maximum dosage of 2 mg per pound in a 24-hour period.
* Dramamine reduces motion sickness, which can be helpful for car travel. The recommended dosage is 50 mg every 8 hours.
* To induce vomiting in case of accidental poisoning, use Hydrogen Peroxide 3% solution. Give 10 ml orally every 15 minutes.
* Epinephrine, also known as an Epi-Pen, is used to treat severe reactions to medicines or insect bites and stings. Inject 1/10 to 1/2 ml into the muscle or under the skin.
* Pepto Bismol is used to treat diarrhea, vomiting, and gas. Give your dog 1 tsp for every 5 lbs of body weight every 6 hours.
* Di-Gel Liquid is an antacid which should be given every 8 hours, up to 4 tablespoons.
* Mineral oil can be used as a laxative, giving your dog up to 4 tbs daily in case of constipation.
* Kaopectate is used to treat diarrhea; the dosage is 1 ml per pound every 2 hours.
For safety, it is a good idea to consult your veterinarian about recommended treatments before your dog gets sick. This can save you time and worry in the event something happens, because you will already be prepared.
