Your First Visits With The Orthodontist For Braces

If your child needs braces, you will get a referral to an orthodontist

. Your child may not be very excited. Then again, some children do not mind a bit. This can be costly and time consuming for parents. Let us look at the process of getting braces.

At the appointment, you will be asked to fill out the usual medical history. You will want to bring films from your usual dentist as well. The specialist can do this, but it is expensive to do something you already have done. At this appointment, your child's bite, tooth placement, and development will be noted. All of this is to determine how long your child will need braces or if he is a candidate. This appointment is generally where you find out what this will cost.

After the office determines that your child is a candidate, they will schedule you for an appointment for spacers. These are really important. This is the prep work that allows them to place the bands on the back molars. This appointment creates space for the metal rings to fit. Without this appointment, the patient would find the next step quite painful.

The next part of the process is more uncomfortable. The orthodontist props the patient's mouth open to keep the teeth and gums exposed. They will make an impression of the teeth. They then apply the brackets to the teeth. At this point, they thread the wires through the brackets. Then, the bands are placed.

Once it is over, most people find it was not so bad. It is mostly just a lot of sitting there with your mouth open. The next week or so is the hardest part for most people. The complaint is usually discomfort. You may also find it hard to eat while you adjust. There is a list of foods you should not eat. If a child complains about things like oranges and apples, the suggestion is to cut them into small pieces. The official list includes, chips, jerky, nuts, taffy, hard candy, popcorn, gum, and caramel.

Braces are an expensive commitment. You will need to see the orthodontist to be readjusted about once a month. You may have to wear them for six months to several years. A patient should expect some discomfort after readjustments. This should be planned for. You do not want to be out to dinner after a readjustment for instance. When all is said and done, you will be pleased to have a nicer looking smile.
