In 2002, The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a survey that revealed that out of the streams sampled, 69% of them contained traces of detergent metabolites and 66% of them contained harmful disinfectants.
Not only that, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has unveiled the fact that the air inside a home cleaned with those harmful detergents is approximately 2-5 times more contaminated than the air outside. Just imagine the outside air is safer than your cleaned home air?

Satisfactory success has been accomplished by the various laws and enforcements implemented till now. For instance, almost 11 U.S. states have banned the usage of phosphate in detergents. Few other cities and states have even moved a step further by abolishing the usage of certain products and using safer products.
In the year 1994, the city of Santa Monica in California was successful in replacing the traditional cleaners with the less toxic products; on analysis it was further observed that this step lead to a 5% saving on annual overheads and also avoiding the purchase of about 1.5 tons of hazardous toxins that year!
According to the natural goods retailer Seventh Generation, the U.S. market for NATURAL household cleaning products grew to over $100 million in a year. This was just 1% of the aggregate household cleaner market, but since the least five years, about 18-25% growth has been witnessed!
What can you do as an individual?
Now you could easily contribute to this growing percentage of using natural and safer products for your home.
You could start by storing some natural, safe and simple elements to clean your home. For instance, baking soda, lemon juice, mild soaps, vinegar, borax and a coarse scrubbing sponge can take care of most of the cleaning facets at home.
A typical drain cleaner consists of lye, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid (the deadly combination). Instead, just pour a cup of baking soda on the clogged drain followed by a cup of vinegar. When the fizzing stops, close the drain lid tight and flush it with boiling water. It produces the same result!
To clean the windows and glass, a combination of half white vinegar and half water can do wonders.
Using baking soda and cornstarch can act as amazing carpet deodorizers. And if your oven needs some cleaning, dont touch that detergent: instead use a paste of baking soda, salt and hot water and see the difference!
