Your Kind Of E-reader

While today's society is one that does not wholly indulge in reading as a norm

, unless there is school involved, readership trends have an ascending curve. If this means anything, it's that a growing market for electronic readers is being cultured. Being a device that eliminates the need for any hardcopy print, e-readers are the definition of convenience. If you can be described as the kind that wants a book to read any free hour of your day, then an e-reader is a must for you. But then again, what kind of electronic reader should you go for exactly?

It's not a question with one standard answer. Rather, its one which compels you to examine the kind of reader you are, and your readership habits. First question is what kind of reader are you? Do you read almost every other day of the week, or just once or twice? This is important because it will determine three things- the storage capacity of the e-reader you get, and the battery life, and the supported formats.

Putting that into perspective, a good e-reader should give you 2-weeks of battery life, at the very least. In terms of page turns, they should be about 2500. Concerning the storage, card slots ensure that you have any and every e-book with you at all times.

No matter how good, expensive or how sophisticated an e-reader is, it should replicate a reading display that makes it feel like you are reading a regular book. This black and white outlook, created by an eInk system, ensures that your eyes get the same comfort as they would from reading a normal book. Excessive brightness is controlled by the antiglare screen.

Screen estate is also worth considering. If you read a lot, you would be more comfortable with a bigger screen, 9" to be more precise, rather than a smaller 5" one. If chances are, you are going to be traveling with your reader as often, get one that is light in weight. 10 ounces is the standard, give or take. The iPad is good and all, but only if you don't mind the 1.5lbs of weight.

What kind of connectivity does it offer? Is it Wi-Fi dependent, or does it complement that with 3G. A frequent traveler has better luck with 3G, since it allows roaming. Do you want any extras with your e-reader, like a dedicated web browser? And finally have a look at your budget. You may want the iPad that offers the whole nine yards, but if you only have $260, then the Nook or Amazon Kindle is much more reachable.
