Youve just brought home your bundle of joy. You cant wait to get home and start being a parent. But before you do so, there are some steps you need to take to ensure your babys safety, so following are some newborn safety tips.

The first of these newborn safety tips are all pretty obvious and based in common sense. Always have precautions like smoke alarms installed in the babys nursery. Make sure your changing table has straps and railings that are an inch or two over the edge of the table. Keep any and all small objects completely out of babys graspno matter how uncoordinated they may seem, youd be surprised what they can manage to put in their mouths! And above all, NEVER drive without baby safely strapped in a good car seat: even a trip around the block could become deadly.

There are many other newborn safety tips to keep in mind as well, however. If you use a pacifier, make sure it doesnt have a string to place around babys neck to keep it in reach; this could very easily choke the baby. Dont place baby in a mesh playpen, as baby may become entangled in that mesh while trying to roll over. Also keep an eye on the babys crib; the crib slats should be no wider than 2 and 3/8 inches apart to prevent baby from getting an arm or leg stuck. Another newborn safety tip is to always empty the crib of ALL pillows, stuffed animals, toys, etc. in order to prevent these items from becoming suffocation devices.

Some additional tips that are less well known include never let baby sleep on their sidebabies should always be placed on their backs. Also, dont send baby to bed with a bottle, as this is both a choking and dental growth and health issue. When you want to take your newborn out for a walk, make sure the stroller has crotch safety straps so they cant fall out. Never have aspirin anywhere near a newborn, as there is solid medical evidence that aspirin use in infants may cause Ryes Syndrome. Finally, avoid the use of talcum powders as these can be breathed in by your baby and cause respiratory distress.

Ensuring your newborns health can be as simple as following these guidelines and checking with other new parents for other ideas. Doing so will help you to relax about your newborns safety and enjoy your time with him or her a great deal more!
