Once upon a time if you did find an office in any home it would probably consist

of a small flat pack desk with maybe a folding chair and a waste paper bin. Now people are turning towards self-employment and also some have the opportunity to work from home. If you spend any time at all working from home you need an area or room you can call an office and there are several things you really need to have in that space. Of course theres the desk and office chair, but even choosing those two things need careful consideration.

In advance of buying any furniture or items for your office you need to assess your needs and your home. Is the office in a separate room or in part of another room, as that will dictate how much you have in your home office and what size the furniture can be. If you are lucky enough to have a large room set aside as your office or study then you can pretty much choose any type of desk and office chair you like along with your filing cabinet, storage solutions and any other tables for printers or computer hardware.

The desk needs to be a size which accommodates all you need immediately to hand, if you use a laptop or netbook in your office only then a smaller desk would be okay. If you have a desk top PC then the desk needs to be much bigger. Assess the size of the space and room and then check the dimensions of the desks you like to ensure they fit in. As for your office chair first and foremost it needs to be comfortable. An executive leather chair with adjustable height, back support and angle would be ideal if youre spending a long time at your desk. You also need to do a workspace assessment to make sure you are at the optimum distance from your computer screen and at the correct height for reaching the keyboard.

Your office chair is possibly one of the more important items in your home office and if you get it right then you can work in absolute comfort. If you pick a chair simply on how it looks then you may find that its uncomfortable and you cant sit at it for more than a half hour. What you also need to think about is the time you spend in your office space, if its just a few hours a week then you can probably buy good quality at the cheaper end of the price scale. If you work 100% from home then you really need to spend more on your office furniture. Trust me a poor quality office chair can do more harm than good when youre sitting at it for a long time. If youre uncomfortable and feel cramped in a space then you wont be able to concentrate fully on your work.

Even the smallest space in the house can become an office with great looking furniture and a luxury leather chair; you just have to choose carefully. Working from home can be a distracting thing and you need distractions to a minimum to make your office work. Whether its an antique solid wooden leather topped desk or a modern glass and chrome desk you need to get your office chair right.
