In his case, it seemed like a mixture of both. It was a gift because men always wonder what women are thinking and what it is they want, but then the curse is that he isn't able to control what he hears and who he hears it from. Imagine walking around a bunch of people and simultaneously hearing all of their thoughts. This can be quite annoying and could even drive someone mad.

Then there is the concept that twins are born with telepathic abilities, meaning they are able to hear each others thoughts, but it is more controlled. In most instances the thoughts are thrown to one another in conversation form. So only what they want to reveal is revealed. Another form of telepathy, which has been reported to happen between twins and other related persons, is when one has extreme pain or is in trouble and the other would feel it. For instance, your sister gets hit and you feel it or when your brother is in trouble you can sense an eerie dread that something is wrong.

Telepathy is a very hot topic in the psychic genre. People in science and even at home try to send thoughts to others and test each other out to see if they can hear what they're thinking. Likely, as a child, you've tried to do the same thing. Connecting with one or more minds in order to communicate is very possible. Just think of best friends and couples who've known each other a while or have that instant connection. They finish each other's sentences and have the same ideas at the same moment. This is a form of telepathy, although many people may think that it's just a coincidence or that the individuals have grown to know each other really well. But what about people who've just met? This is a topic that's hard to prove, yet hard to deny.

You may even be able to open up other abilities, such as telekinesis or even clairvoyance. Becoming one with what's around you allows you to see, hear and feel things that others who aren't connected can't.
