Youth Rugby League Records In The National Youth Competition
The National Youth Competition, also known as the Toyota Cup
, is the official development competition for the Australian National Rugby League. It was instituted in 2008, and the competition consists of teams from the clubs that participate in the National Rugby League competition. These clubs field squads which are made up of players aged 17 to 19 years old.
Since its inception, the junior counterpart of the National Rugby League has received a significant following. Fans of the league have enjoyed watching play after play, as they bore witness to some of the greatest league records ever made in the National Youth Competition.
Fans at the Toyota Park in July of 2008 were shocked to witness the most lopsided match in league history. The Newcastle Knights trounced the Cronulla Sharks to the score of 56 - 4. The 52-point margin went down in league history as the biggest winning margin in a regular match. Incidentally, the Sharks also matched their 4-point output in a loss against the St. George Illawarra Dragons, which is the lowest scoring game in league history. The final score during that match was 6 4.
The highest scoring match ever played was at the Sydney Football Stadium, when the Wests Tigers defeated the home team Sydney Roosters, 56 32. The St. George Illawarra Dragons also hold the
youth rugby league record for the longest string of won games in league history at 10 wins. The dubious record for longest losing streak is held by the Sydney Roosters, who lost 13 consecutive games in 2008.
Another interesting fact in
youth rugby league games is the draw. New Zealand Warriors have been involved in 2 consecutive matches that ended in a draw. The first was a 26 - 26 draw against the Bulldogs in April of 2008 at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland. The second was a 24 - 24 draw against the North Queensland Cowboys a few days later at the Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville.
But perhaps the most inspiring of these
youth rugby league records are the comebacks. In April of 2008, the struggling Brisbane Broncos stared at a 0 24 deficit against the Melbourne Storm at halftime. The game ended in a Broncos victory, 28 24, with the Broncos effectively shutting down the Storms offense the entire second half.
