Investigators have found that rod cells are abundant with lutein, and the cone cells with zexanthin. And the cone cells are critical for central vision.

The tinted part of macula, viz. the pigments, is mainly composed of zexanthin and lutein. The pigments can filter out any harmful rays coming into the eyes.

As we grow old, we are prone to a disease-Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), for the color of these eye pigments become lighter and lighter. In most cases, AMD can lead to very serious eye problems, or even permanent blindness.


In this sense, these pigments are crucial for the health of our macula and can help maintain our vision. This is because, the ingredients of these pigments-zexanthin and lutein- are very powerful antioxidants that can slow down the process of macular degeneration.

The two nutrients are so important that most of us begin to find some methods to get them. Of which, supplements are good choices. In some cases, the two ingredients are combined in the same supplement. The two nutrients are Carotenoids and can be gained from marigold flowers.

It is true that there are some zexanthin in lutein supplements, for this is good for our macula. Of course, we can also buy any refined single nutrient.

Some investigations have revealed that zeaxanthin can be found in some foods, among which gojis berries is very typical and extraordinary. Goji berries can not be easily got, but it is available at some Chinese herbal stores.
