Zombies have been an influential part in the genre of horror
, portraying a potentially nonfictional characterisation of the people of earth. Zombies instil in to people a fear, yet an intrigue, as they look very human but they are so obviously monsters. This paradoxical idea causes the zombie subgenre to make its way as a more popular subgenre in the world of horror.
When it comes to zombies in the media, there is always something happening. This year we have the release of the fifth Resident Evil film, last year Dead Season, and next year there are rumoured to be at least ten zombie films being released, with more in the pipeline. This shows that no matter the year, or the trends that are happening in the film world (There is no doubt that there was a superhero craze with the releasing of The Avengers earlier this year), zombies as a subgenre of the horror world will rise through it all.
Creating a zombie film is simple. The main plot seems to be normal life zombie outbreak survivors win or lose. The same can be said for the games, and books that come out. However the side-plots that come about with those things are so intricate and complex, that it is no wonder that such a simple seeming story has such a wide fan base.
Zombie costumes are also similar in that they seem simple, but they can be made much more complex. Creating a zombie costume for a beginner can be hard, however this is why fancy dress retailers have such a large variety of zombie costumes in stock. This means that the effort of creating a zombie outfit does not need to be done, and it can be simple to become one of the undead.
Most people will take their inspiration for their costumes from films, books and games on the zombie genre. This is something that costume designers will also do. Creating a fancy dress costume of the zombie genre with inspiration taken from films can lead to costumes becoming more recognisable by consumers. If this is something that people choose their costumes on, then it can see revenue greatly increasing. Drawing inspiration from a film or game is simple enough to do.
There are hundreds of zombie films out there, there have been a total of 570 zombie films created since the start of cinema. This means that on average there have been nearly 57 zombie films created every year. That means 4 zombie films per month. With the high volume of this type of film coming out, it is no wonder that costumes imitating the films styles are usually some of the first to leave the shelves of the fancy dress retailers all across the united kingdom.
The world of fancy dress is incredibly diverse, with hundreds of branches and options available for just one particular genre alone. This means that the preparation for Halloween and other holidays (like the festival season) is taken incredibly seriously, and is the thing that makes the fancy dress retail world becomes so busy.
In 2011, a grand total of 26 zombie-based movies were released, all met with high praise. The year 2012 has seen that zombie-craze wave ridden out, with just 12 zombie-based movies being released. However, this shows that whilst the popularity has decreased, it has not yet diminished. And with such a popular franchise as Resident Evil releasing yet another film, it can be anticipated that the zombies will see yet another surge of approval and popularity.
Other than Resident Evil, Wikipedia lists at least 618 zombie films that have been made since the film industry was first bought in to the horror movie genre. This is a testament to the popularity of them, considering the high volume. Many of these films have been made in the last 30 years, making that an average of 20 zombie films per year.
With the zombie films, games, and other things that have been born of the genre, there have come zombie walks. These are very popular, among young adults and teenagers. Residents of Leicester City took it upon themselves in the summer of 2011 to stage a zombie walk, upon learning that the council did not have a zombie apocalypse plan. In Birmingham, there is an annual zombie walk that has been set up, for people to gather and have fun. Zombie walks are done for many reasons, the largest one being that people are taken in by the zombie craze, and simply want to express their love of the genre fully.
