Zoysia Grass Versus Bermuda Grass

When a lot of homeowners settle into their homes

, one of the things they think about is the pleasures of having a great lawn. But what type to choose. With so many choices in the marketplace, the typical homeowner is confused about which species of grass to buy.

A decision that many people are beginning to make for themselves is to choose the zoysia grass species. But, one matter that pretty much all homeowners should do before selecting a type of grass for their lawn is to ask the friendly people at their local garden center for what grows best in the region.

No matter where you go in the country, each region has one or more grass species that have proven to be perfect for that type of environment. And every region is different. A grass that grows good in harsh desert like areas is most likely not the same grass that will do well in tropical, moist environments. Nevertheless, if the people in your garden center fail to bring zoysia up, bring it up yourself and ask them their opinions of it.

Among grasses, zoysia grass is known as one of the hardiest species. It is very popular in parts of the country where draughts are a natural occurrence. That is because it needs a lot less water to thrive than do most species of grass. You will also find it in colder areas of the country, such as New York. Being hardy has its good and bad points. One good point is that zoysia grass is so hardy that once it's established, weeds pretty much don't have a chance. Are you tired of putting poisons on your grass to combat weeds? Well, with zoysia, odds are that you won't need to. The bad point about zoysia, is that it's very invasive and once it is established, it's difficult to get rid of.

It wasn't that long ago that anyone deciding on a grass species to plant in their lawn would pretty much decide on bermuda grass. Not only is it a great low maintenance type of grass, but it looks beautiful as well. For people that were tired of paying exorbitant water bills due to their lawns, bermuda grass was the answer to their prayers. Bermuda grass requires hardly any watering at all. It is a "creeping grass" with strong enough roots and coverage to keep weeds from gaining a foothold. As a consequence, it requires very little weeding. The fact that bermuda grass is used in many sports stadiums is a testament to the amount of foot traffic that it can handle.

And today, exactly the identical things that resulted in many homeowners choosing bermuda in past years, is the factor that is fast making zoysia the clear choice for many. It has pretty much all of the same benefits as bermuda grass, but on steroids. The one negative thing that they both have in common, however, is their high price tag.

But, their is a compensatory benefit that works in both of their favors. And that is the fact that both of these are invasive grasses. So, unlike other grasses, you don't necessarily have to begin with full coverage of an area. If you are patient to just wait a couple of years, the grasses will do the filling in of bare spots themselves just fine.

Still undecided as to which grass species to decide on? If you have a coin handy, flip it. Either way, it's hard to go wrong.
