Speaking of layout, did you notice you started with your red barn next to the street? What the heck is the point in that? It works just as well away from the road, unlike your major businesses (these definitely belong on the street).

So the first thing you should do is use your move tool and take the red barn off the street. You also start off with various trees growing in empty spaces. These do nothing, but don't chop them down until the task comes up to "chop down three trees." At this point you might be considering starting over, especailly if you are struggling with your city.
