Spending a day in the corporate life is wrought with rules, obligations, and principles. Employees in the organization are often perplexed at figuring out the right conduct or behaviour. Either the managers or the HR department is specific when it comes to trifles that have a significant influence upon the assessment of an individual as he works with the company. With very few role models and contrasting behaviour of mentors, employees are often at crossroads as to the right mode of behaviour to enter into everyone's good books. Climbing the corporate ladder and scaling to new heights in career growth are possible only when you prove to be an exemplary corporate citizen. There are some behaviour patterns that are often overlooked by the majority of employees. Here is a list of trifles that determine if you are an exemplary corporate citizen.

Do's:

Keep working when other employees while away their time chatting. Seek assignments when finished with regular tasks.


Accept schedule changes whenever necessary and offer to stay late when there is more workload.

Maintain good attendance and be punctual. Managers often take note and warn the chronic latecomers. It is a daunting task to alter the image from a latecomer to a punctual employee.

Actively participate in all meetings and presentations. Volunteer to help your manager for any corporate presentations. You need not initiate a sudden change in behaviour. A gradual yet quick recovery towards active contribution in meetings and presentations is appreciated.

Regularly share information and help other employees. Shed the belief that sharing your tips and tricks might add to the power of competition. Sharing knowledge is essential and you will soon be recognized for any leadership positions.

Respect management decisions and try to find the rationale if the decisions are detrimental to your growth. Discussing with the manager often solves such problems.

Don'ts:

Employees often use work phones to make personal calls. Similarly, they exploit the workplace resources for personal benefit. This is indicative of lack of corporate ethics on the part of the employee.

People who conduct personal business during office hours or interrupt other work are considered to be counter-productive. These actions add to the negative impressions in the eyes of the manager.

Threatening or bullying other employees. Refuse to take regular orders from the supervisor and reluctant to cooperate with other employees.

Being too aggressive while dealing with superiors, peers, and subordinates is again a risky factor. You are soon branded as an irate employee.


Trying to dominate other employees during meetings is a strict no-no. Encourage colleagues to come up with valuable suggestions. Act more as a team player rather than leader.

Abstaining from crucial meetings and coming up with silly reasons is considered as a sign of lack of interest and motivation. Most meetings are aimed at encouraging collaborative effort and any dislike towards meetings is considered as token of disrespect towards managerial policies.

Avoid theft and drug misuse. They are considered as the basic grounds for dismissal and other disciplinary actions.

Generally, most of the organizations recommend and favour the employees who are loyal. Organizations make tremendous efforts to bring in employee loyalty. Despite the numerous efforts made by the management, if some employees lack in loyalty, it paints a bad picture. Employee disloyalty is often considered to be contagious and hence steps are taken to curb disloyalty in the first instance. Managers keep a constant tab on the behaviour of employees. Some managers even go to the extent of maintaining dairies on the behaviour styles of each employee. When errant behaviour tends to repeat, they begin with discussions and warnings. Lack of change in the employee attitude signifies the need for disciplinary action. Therefore, to reach the great heights of successful career, one should stand as an exemplary corporate citizen.
