"Bihar less developed because development was ignored for last 20 years" Sonia Gandhi

Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi addressing a massive election rally today in Buxar, Bihar pointed out that the cause of underdevelopment of Bihar was the blatant indifference of last two governments towards development projects started by the erstwhile Congress government in Bihar 20 years ago. She said that this sacred land of brave freedom fighters was also the Karmabhumi of Babu Jagjivan Ram who had laid the foundations of Durgavati Irrigation Project many years ago in the region. But due to petty politics and apathy of subsequent non-Congress governments towards developmental projects in irrigation and education, the farmers have remained impoverished and the state backward, she said.

Congress President added that Bihar had tremendous potential in agriculture, but due to lack of irrigation, agriculture growth has remained hindered. Backwardness of Bihar has also been aggravated due to poor power situation because of which industrial and agricultural growth has evaded the state, she added. She pointed out that no additional power units have been added in the state for many years by any non-Congress government.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that poverty and backwardness was prevalent in the entire state and this election provided a good opportunity to change this situation for good. She exhorted the power of franchise in democracy and urged the people to vote for a regime which would focus on development, economy and employment.

Congress President pointed out that the current government has made many hollow promises and showed unrealistic dreams. But the truth was that youth of state are still unemployed and have to leave their homes and families in search of jobs, she said.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that while the youth of Bihar exhibited tremendous potential after acquiring education outside the state and served the nation in various important capacities, yet in their own state, their future always remained dark and uncertain.

Congress President also pointed out the poor implementation of Central Government programmes in Bihar. She said that Minimum Support Price was not being given to the farmers in the state, compelling them to suffer in the hands of middlemen. She said that the Centre was sending crores of rupees to the state for implementing developmental programmes like MNREGS, JNURM, Bharat Nirman, Mid-day Meal for children, reservation for women in Panchayats, etc. but the money was not reaching the poor people. She asked the people to question those responsible as to where the money was vanishing.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that time had come to join hands for laying the foundation of a new Bihar and to ensure a bright future for the coming generations. Urging people to caste their precious votes in favour of Congress party, she pointed out that other parties have been perpetuating politics of caste and religion just to stay in power and have made compromises with communal parties. She said that people of Bihar had given them enough time and now was the time to change for a better and developed Bihar. She asked the people not to get cheated by them once again and help Congress party in building the future of Bihar with focus on development, progress and employment.
